What Fire Extinguisher Do I Need For My Business?
This depends on the type of business
you run and the fire risks that occur in your building. This is usually
determined by carrying out a
fire
risk assessment which can be done by a qualified professional or by
the nominated person in your company. It is better to keep the types of
fire extinguishers you have so that they have the same method of
operation to avoid confusion.
Generally in an office based environment you should have a
water fire extinguisher for
putting out fires on paper, wood or plastics plus a
CO2 extinguisher for electrical
fire risks. A
powder fire
extinguisher is recommended for fires caused by wood, paper, paint
and fuel for example in a workshop environment as the powder will put
out a fire but can also make a mess.
Foam fire extinguishers are
required if you have flammable liquids.
Wet chemical extinguishers
are recommended for class F fire risks such as deep fat dryers. In some
instance
fire blankets are also
recommended in kitchens.
How Many Fire Extinguishers Do I Need?
The number of fire extinguishers you need again depends on the nature of
your business and the risks involved. A
Fire Risk Assessment is always
recommended to evaluate the premises and the fire risks involved. This
is also part of your legal obligations under
fire safety regulations.
Without carrying out a fire risk assessment it is difficult to estimate
the number of fire extinguishers you will need but as a general rule, on
each floor there should be at least 2 fire extinguishers for every 200 square metres of floor space
in your building. It is generally accepted that you should have a CO2
fire extinguisher as well to deal with electrical fires caused by
computers and electrical equipment.
