A powder fire extinguisher is recommended for fires caused by wood, paper, paint and fuel for example in a workshop environment as the powder will put out a fire but can also make a mess.  Foam fire extinguishers are required if you have flammable liquids. Wet chemical extinguishers are recommended for class F fire risks such as deep fat dryers. In some instance fire blankets are also recommended in kitchens.

It is generally accepted that you should have a CO2 fire extinguisher as well to deal with electrical fires caused by computers and electrical equipment.
